Virgilio is a phygital product system designed to assist the way-finding process in hospitals, especially for the elderly patients. In current scenario, the map and signage system in hospitals doesn’t communicate well to the elderly patients, leading to their mental insecurity as well as volunteers’ unnecessary and repeated work. In addition, the aging population in Europe make it a potentially growing phenomenon. To address this issue, Virgilio is born. It consists of three parts:
1 - Map totems to visualize the route as well as the current stage of the whole journey
2 - A handheld device with RFID chips and GPS to activate the display of individual-specific information on the map totem as well as providing real-time directional hint in outdoor environments
3 - Auxiliary dynamic sign boards to assist the navigation of the indoor environment
Virgilio is instant, direct, and distinct with easy interaction mode, effective visual communication, and timely feedback, allowing elderly people to navigate in the complex hospital environment independently without the hassle of seeking help from passerby or volunteers. Thanks to Virgilio, the navigation experience in hospitals is streamlined, providing elderly patients with security and assurance.
